my training philosophy
At Iron Sharp K9, I believe that dog training should do more than teach commands. It should build trust, clarity, and lasting transformation between dog and owner.
While I like to just focus on training the individual dog in front of me, my approach is rooted in balanced training. A philosophy that uses both positive reinforcement and fair, consistent accountability. I believe every dog is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all method that works for every dog, every time. Training should meet the dog where they are, and help them grow into the best version of themselves.
In simple terms, balanced training means I will reward the behaviors I want to see, but I will also clearly communicate when behaviors are not acceptable or need to change. The dog learns not just what to do, but also what not to do, and how to navigate the world with confidence and understanding.
Clarity is everything to a dog.
Dogs do not thrive in confusion. If they are constantly rewarded but never taught boundaries, they can become pushy, anxious, or frustrated. On the other hand, if they are only corrected with no understanding of what is right, they become shut down or fearful. Balanced training teaches BOTH sides of the equation.
Every dog has its own drives, temperament, and learning style. My job is to read that dog clearly, build a communication system that makes sense to them, and teach their owner how to lead with confidence.
Dogs thrive on structure and consistent leadership. They feel safe when they know what is expected of them. I teach owners how to provide that structure. Not through harshness, but through calm, fair communication and balanced expectations.
Relationship is the heart of it all.
Your dog should be able to go places with you, hold obedience in distracting environments, and live as a well-mannered member of your family. That’s the standard I aim for with every dog and handler I work with.
Above all, I believe that training is a process of forging clarity through pressure and building a bond that lasts, much like iron itself. The goal isn’t to create a robot, it’s to create a dog who is confident, clear, respectful, and connected to its owner.
Every dog deserves a loving home and a full belly. Every owner deserves a dog they can trust and enjoy.
That’s what I strive to help you build, one session at a time.
